The recent release of Joss Turnbull´s debut solo album "Isturnbull" proves to be a fascintating and demanding addition to the market of world music and in particular percussion music. Turnbull, a young and immensely talented percussionist from Mannheim, Germany has brought together different musical worlds in a very original and convincing way. The percussionist is not only a veritable expert and virtuoso on different oriental drums such as tombak, riq, bendir and darbuka but he also expands their already extensive spectrums of sound immensely through the use of all kinds of gadgets and electronics. His style of playing has a high percentage of improvisation, sometimes over a strictly composed form and at others nearly completely free. Here Turnbull is able to bring together improvisation, electronics, contemporary classical music and oriental music and sounds. Anybody expecting your usual oriental thing will be dissappointed - this is an album that needs to be heard more than once to be understood and liked but it´s worth it.
